Carbon tax ad criticism ‘laughable’

TREASURER Wayne Swan has dismissed as "laughable" criticism of the Federal Government's advertising campaign for the carbon tax's household compensation package.

The Government is spending $36 million over two years on print Windows 7 activation key, radio and TV ads to sell the assistance package, which is aimed at cushioning the financial impact of the carbon tax.

The new ads appeared yesterday and the first assistance payments will land in people’s bank accounts in the coming weeks.

The Opposition has labelled them "dishonest" for failing to mention the carbon tax.

Mr Swan denies the Government is trying to hide the carbon price.

"This is a laughable criticism," he told ABC Radio today.

"We have been talking about a carbon price in this country for the past five years."

He defended the campaign’s $36 million price tag, saying it was important to explain why the cash payments were being made.

"What we’re doing is informing people of what they’re going to see in their bank accounts," he said.

"The Government in no way apologises for doing that."

Some $14 million will be spent this financial year on the ad campaign, with $22 million budgeted for 2012/13.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott said the ads were "dishonest" for not mentioning the carbon tax.

"They can erase the name but they can’t erase the pain Exchange Server Key," he told ABC Radio.

"This is the sort of thing that gives this government, rightly, a very bad name."

Opposition climate action spokesman Greg Hunt said Labor was spending $270,000 a day on the ad campaign between now and June 30.

"It is a complete waste of public money Windows 7 oem key," he told ABC radio.

It didn’t matter that the ads had been approved by an independent committee since there was no rule to address the "fundamental dishonesty" of "carbon tax ads without the carbon tax".

"This is dishonest, it’s disreputable," he said.

Mr Hunt pledged the Coalition would cut at least $50 million from government advertising if it won power.

Israel – ‘Victory Will Be Greater If Hunger Strike

Israel – Security officials fear that the death of any Palestinian prisoner as a result of the ongoing hunger strike, which has entered its 21st day, may lead to an eruption of violence in the territories, the Yedioth Ahronoth daily reported Monday.

Some 1,600 Palestinian prisoners are protesting against the conditions of their incarceration replica watches, which were significantly worsened while Gilad Shalit was held captive by Hamas in Gaza. Among other things, the prisoners are demanding an end to solitary confinement, an end to administrative detentions and reinstating family visits from Gaza. They are also demanding that Israel allow them to take university courses and give them access to Arab TV channels.

The Israel Prison Service has agreed to give the prisoners some of their privileges back, but has not accepted their demand to end the administrative detention policy.

Khader Adnan, who was the first prisoner to launch a hunger strike, said “from our perspective, the hunger strike will be considered a success in any case, regardless of whether the prisoners’ demands are met or if they die in prison.”

Adnan, who refused food for more than two months replica watches, ended his strike after Israel agreed to release him from administrative detention.

“If they die, the victory will be even greater,” he said. “In any case replica watches, Israel will be held responsible.”

Mr Robertson's numbers went down from 15 per cent to 14 per cent.

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — The Jefferson County Commission voted 3-2 today to pay $3.6 million in past due invoices for Cooper Green Mercy Hospital.

Commission President David Carrington and Commissioners Sandra Little Brown and George Bowman voted to make the payments. Commissioners Jimmie Stephens and Joe Knight voted against making the payments.

The vote came after lengthy questioning by commissioners, mostly Carrington, on payments apparently made from a hospital discretionary fund without knowledge of the full commission.

Carrington questioned hospital officials about nearly $85 The Best Tattoo Guns,000 in payments that went to consultants who visited the county to discuss the creation of a healthcare authority.

John Garrett, Cooper Green’s chief financial officer, said he was directed by Bowman to make the payments. Dr. Sandral Hullett, chief executive officer and medical director of the facility, said she was also directed by Bowman to make the payments.

Bowman said he was the appointing authority, or the commissioner responsible for the hospital at the time, and made the decision to order the payments to prevent Cooper Green from closing.

Bowman said the discretionary fund allowed payments for emergencies and he considered keeping the hospital open a priority.

Knight said he did not want to see the hospital close but did want to see accountability and efficiency of operations which the hospital still has not shown, as evidenced by the commission’s discovery of the discretionary fund and additional unpaid invoices that the commission did not know about Tattoo Of Tattoo Gun, he said.

Drastic pension overhaul biggest in state history

Updated 9:11 PM Saturday, May 12, 2012

COLUMBUS — The looming changes to Ohio’s four largest public employee retirement funds represent the most sweeping pension overhaul in state history and the first time that 1.7 million government workers and retirees would see significant cuts to their pension benefits.

Retirees will see their cost of living allowances cut and workers will be told to put in more years, pay more money into the system and accept a lesser benefit at the end of a long career, if the bills become law.

Pension officials, who have been begging lawmakers to take action for nearly three years Christian Audigier Clothing sale, say the changes are needed to shore up their finances for the long haul and to allow them to avert drastic cutbacks in health care benefits for current and future retirees.

Stock market losses, people living longer, generous benefits and crushing health care costs are driving the need for reforms. Without changes, the systems would eventually run out of money to issue monthly pension checks.

And more immediately, without changes, Ohio Public Employees Retirement System would slash its annual spending on retiree health care to $500 million.

The spending cuts, from $1.6 billion, would begin in 2014, said OPERS Executive Director Karen Carraher.

“No one is extremely happy with all the changes Buy Missoni Dresses, especially those affecting them. However, most retirees understand the STRS’ financial situation. And they are accepting and supporting the proposed plan,” said Ann Hanning, executive director of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, which has 30,000 members. “We know that some things must change and the sooner, the better for all members of the system.”

The five pension systems are: Public Employees Retirement System, State Teachers Retirement System, Schools Employees Retirement System (non teachers), Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund and the Highway Patrol Retirement System which is not impacted by the reform bills.

The bills would require active teachers to contribute 14 percent of their pretax income to the retirement plan, up from the current 10 percent.

A teacher making $60,000 would have to plan for $2,400 per year less once the change was fully phased in.

“Are they thrilled about it? Probably not,” said Centerville High School math teacher Brian Cayot, who leads the district’s teachers’ union. “But they understand that it’s a necessary evil in order to have your retirement there at the end.”

Cayot said some teachers are frustrated by a proposal that would push retirement eligibility back at least five years, to age 60 after 35 years of service.

But he said many teachers just want the state to come up with a system and stick to it so they can make a plan, after years of varying proposals have left them guessing.

Ohio Senate President Tom Niehaus, R-New Richmond, and Senate Minority Leader Eric Kearney, D-Cincinnati, introduced four pension reforms bills, one for each of the four largest systems. Niehaus said he hopes the bills will go to the Senate floor for votes this week.

The bills are likely to stall in the Ohio House where key members are urging their colleagues to wait for a consultant’s report to double-check the numbers and changes being pitched by the pension boards. State Rep. J. Kirk Schuring, R-Canton, a member of the Ohio Retirement Study Council, said, “I think we should do something this year. Hopefully, we’ll be on the same page and on the same path sometime later this year.”

Lawmakers are scheduled to recess from June through the November election. The House may take up pension reform after lawmakers return in November.

How do funds work?

Like most states, Ohio’s public pensions are defined benefit systems. The pension benefit is based on age, years of service, final average salary and it is guaranteed, regardless of how well invested contributions performed over the course of the worker’s career. Defined contribution plans, such as 401(k) funds, are more common in the private sector. The employer and worker contribute to a fund over the years but the amount in the retirement nest egg when the career ends isn’t guaranteed.

Public employees in Ohio do not participate in Social Security.

Some fiscal conservatives are disappointed that lawmakers aren’t pushing for a switch to a defined contribution plan or a mandatory hybrid between the two types of plans.

“By many measures, the retirement benefits received by government workers in Ohio, on average, are more generous than those received in the private sector,” said Andrew Schwiebert of the Buckeye Institute, a conservative public policy think tank. He told state senators that Ohio could save $3.3 billion during 30 years by establishing a defined-contribution plan.

Ohio’s proposed changes are in step with reforms recently adopted by other states. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 41 states have enacted significant pension reforms in the past two years. Those changes have included:

• Boosting employee contribution rates.

• Increasing age and service requirements.

• Stretching out the final average salary calculation.

• Adjusting cost of living allowances, according to NCSL.

“Legislatures around the country have been acting (on pension reform proposals.) Ohio is one of the few states that hasn’t acted yet,” said Keith Brainard, research director for the National Association of State Retirement Administrators.

There are five systems that serve 1.8 million Ohioans and invest $163 billion. But STRS, OPF and HPRS don’t have enough funding to pay off all their liabilities over a 30-year period as required by state law. Hyundai CEO Krafcik warns against price war, short

Hyundai Motor America President and CEO John Krafcik believes that some automakers are starting a price war, which would be an unwise move that focuses solely on short-term sales.

General Motors had strong sales in January 2011, but its 23-percent gain was due to increased incentives and price-cutting. After GM made its move, Toyota followed suit.

Krafcik says that Hyundai Tattoo Supplies, whose incentive spending is among the lowest in the industry, has no plans to join in this game. Heavy incentive spending leads to sharp up and downswings in an automaker’s accounting ledger. Hyundai sales rose 24 percent in 2010 and Krafcik expects to see improvements in 2011. While some automakers are fiddling with the radio Tattoo Supplies, Krafcik is paying attention to the road in front of him.

Paris Previewmethane-powered Fiats

In addition to the higher-output Panda Sport, Fiat will be showing two new methane-powered vehicles at the Paris show at the end of the month. Over the past year, across Europe, Fiat has sold 24 Cheap Herve Leger v neck,000 methane-powered cars; the major advantage being reduced CO2 emissions.

You Have Been Liberated

The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal’s world-wide newsbox lead with the Colombia military’s movielike rescue operation that freed former presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt, three U.S. defense contractors, and 11 Colombian soldiers and policemen who were being held hostage in the jungle by leftist rebels. The daring raid was years in the making as Colombian forces apparently managed to infiltrate the upper echelons of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia and convinced guards to group the high-profile hostages in one location to be picked up by what were supposed to be rebel-friendly helicopters. “The operation was impeccable,” Betancourt Herve Leger sale, who was kidnapped in 2002, said at a news conference. Betancourt described how the hostages had no idea what was going on until the rescue helicopter was in the air and an undercover officer turned to them and said: “We’re the Colombian army. You have been liberated.”

The New York Timesfronts the news out of Colombia but leads with a House committee’s conclusion that Bush administration officials knew about Hunt Oil’s plan to sign an oil deal with the Kurdish regional government in Iraq and didn’t object. American policy is to warn companies not to sign separate deals until Iraq passes a national oil law. In fact, the State Department had publicly said it was concerned the deal would undermine the Iraqi central government. But e-mail messages and other documents reveal that State and Commerce department officials not only knew about the impending deal and didn’t object Herve Leger sale, but in some instances even seemed to welcome it. The chief executive of Hunt Oil is a major backer of President Bush and a member of the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board.

The WSJ has the most detailed look at the Colombian rescue operation and says it couldn’t have come at a better time for President Alvaro Uribe, who lately has been engulfed in a bribery scandal. The paper is also, surprisingly, alone in mentioning that the success of the mission is a finger in the eye for Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, who had tried to position himself as the only leader able to negotiate for the release of the hostages. USAT and WSJ note up high that the rescue mission took place on the same day as Sen. John McCain was visiting the country. Of course, the timing was pure coincidence, but it seems Uribe and his aides had briefed McCain about the operation. Curious how the operation worked? The WSJ has a blow-by-blow in a separate story.

U.S. officials took pains to emphasize that the rescue mission was a Colombian-led operation, but everyone notes the United States helped with the planning and provided critical intelligence. The three American citizens who were released yesterday were flown directly to San Antonio, Texas. The Northrop Grumman employees had been in captivity since 2003 Cheap Herve leger strapless, when their surveillance plane crashed.

The FARC is believed to be holding about 700 hostages, but Betancourt, who holds dual French-Colombian citizenship Buy Bandage dresses, was by far the most valuable. French President Nicolas Sarkozy had made her release a priority since he took office, and more than 1,000 cities and towns around the world have made her an honorary citizen. Interestingly enough, the NYT is alone in noting that Betancourt seemed healthy, a contrast to how she looked in a photograph that was widely circulated late last year.

Everyone notes the rescue mission is a huge setback for the FARC, a group that has been fighting the government for more than 40 years but has suffered some crippling blows lately. Three of the group’s top officials have died recently, hundreds are deserting every month, and one top level commander who surrendered in May said the FARC was “crumbling.” The NYT says that the “apparent disintegration” of the FARC has led some to compare it to the Shining Path, a group that once inspired terror but now is made up of a few hundred militants involved in drug trafficking. An editorial in Colombia’s El Tiempo describes yesterday’s raid as the most shattering setback for the FARC and one that “inflicts an unprecedented moral blow.”

The NYT, WP, and LAT front news that McCain made changes in the top levels of his campaign staff in what was the second personnel shakeup in a year. Yesterday, McCain put senior strategist Steve Scmidt, who once worked with Karl Rove Discount Christian Audigier Clothes, in charge of most day-to-day operations and diminished the role of Rick Davis, his campaign manager. The move came after weeks of handwringing by Republicans who have been complaining that McCain seems to lack a clear message to sell his candidacy to voters. Many say McCain is jumping around from issue to issue without a clear strategy and point to his three-day trip to Colombia and Mexico as a prime example of how his campaign lacks focus. The NYT notes the move is the latest sign that many who worked with Rove are gaining influence in the campaign.

The WSJ fronts a look at how McCain backers are finding ways to get around the campaign-finance law, which the presumptive Republican nominee helped to write, in order to catch up to Sen. Barack Obama in the money race. The paper mostly focuses on how the Republican Governors Association is recruiting big-money donors by telling them that anything they contribute will help McCain in key swing states. These types of groups are forbidden from pledging that they’ll help a federal candidate with their money, but those who work at the association are telling donors that helping elect Republican governors will also be good for McCain in November. Republicans are trying to raise $120 million on McCain’s behalf through the national and state parties and 527 organizations, including the governors group.

In yet another bit of bad news for the LAT, the paper reports that it will be cutting 150 jobs from the newsroom by Labor Day and will publish 15 percent fewer pages each week. The editorial downsizing Discount Chloe Dresses, which amounts to about 17 percent of the total newsroom, is part of the latest cost-cutting effort that aims to reduce the total Times staff by 250 positions.

The NYT reports that the polygamist sect that made headlines when hundreds of children were seized from the Yearning for Zion ranch has found a way to profit from all the attention. The sect has created a Web site to sell children’s clothing that adheres to their strict standards “for modesty and neatness,” and apparently there’s been lots of interest. “The venture may have come not a moment too soon,” notes the NYT. “There has not been a soul in the fashion world who has not queasily wondered which designers will cite the women of the Yearning for Zion ranch as an inspiration for their next collections.”

Petraeus vs. the Pastor

Gen. David Petraeus

Republicans are usually eager to trumpet their support for the troops and the war against terror. So why aren’t they condemning the Florida pastor who plans to lead his congregation in a Quran-burning bonfire on Sept. 11?

Gen. David Petraeus, U.S. commander in Afghanistan Where find Replica Girard Perregaux Watches, issued a statement on Sept. 6, warning that the pastor’s action “could endanger our troops,” feed the Taliban’s propaganda machine, and “undermine the effort to accomplish the critical [war] mission.”

Advance word of the burning has already sparked anti-American protests in Kabul, with more scheduled soon. Actual images of burning Qurans, Petraeus said, “would undoubtedly be used by extremists in Afghanistan—and around the world—to inflame public opinion and incite violence,” much like the photos of torture at Abu Ghraib.

So where is John McCain, the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, who brandishes his war-hero credentials at every opportunity and, in the past Where to buy Replica Graham London Watches, has rushed to condemn anyone who dares criticize Gen. Petraeus? Where is the second-ranking Republican, James Inhofe of Oklahoma, who also sits on the Foreign Relations Committee? Where is Saxby Chambliss, who loudly supports big-ticket weapons systems in the name of national security (and the jobs they sustain in his home state of Georgia) but has thus far said nothing to support our troops on this front?

The pastor who lit this conflagration—Terry Jones, head of the 50-member (yes, 50-member) Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Fla.—is quoted in today’s Wall Street Journal as saying, “We understand the general’s concerns. We are sure that his concerns are legitimate.” But, he went on, “We must send a clear message to the radical element of Islam. We will no longer be controlled and dominated by their fears and threats.”

And so, to send this message, Jones and his pathetic flock plan to burn the book regarded as holy by 1.5 billion Muslims, only a tiny percentage of whom sympathize with this “radical element,” though no doubt his protest will boost those ranks at least a little.

It is appalling enough that a growing number of Americans, caught up in the pre-election backlash against mosques and Muslims generally, seem unaware that U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan are fighting not only against Muslims but also alongside them, and on behalf of governments led by Muslim parties. (Do they imagine, in their warped pictures of a holy war against Islam, that Nuri al-Maliki and Hamid Karzai are Christians?)

But U.S. senators know better (most of them anyway). So where are they? Whose side are they on? With the exception of Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, who appeared on Fox News to defend the right of American Muslims to build an Islamic community center two blocks from the World Trade Center site (on the conservative principle that owners of private property should be able to do as they please) Fake Ebel Watches, elected Republicans—and, to be fair Fake Sarcar Watches, most elected Democrats as well—have ducked and run.

In September 2007, the Senate voted 72-25 to condemn the anti-war group MoveOn.org for running a full-page newspaper ad that denounced Gen. Petraeus Replica Seiko Watches, then the U.S. commander in Iraq, as “General Betray Us.”

If the senators want to show their genuine support for Petraeus (and not just indulge in an easy political stunt), they should denounce Terry Jones for endangering the troops and providing aid and comfort to the enemy—and, better still, send federal marshals to Gainesville Replica Breitling Watches, Fla., to help the local fire chief (who has ordered Jones not to burn the books) maintain public safety.
